Jumu’ah — جُمُعَة — is the Friday congregational prayer: an obligatory weekly prayer that replaces Dhuhr for those required to attend. Allah ﷻ says: “O you who believe, when the call to prayer is made on the day of Jumu’ah, hasten to the remembrance of Allah ﷻ and leave off trade.” (Quran 62:9). The command to hasten — drop everything and go — establishes the Friday prayer as among the clearest individual obligations in the Quran.
The significance of Friday in Islam
The Prophet ﷺ said: “The best day on which the sun rises is Friday. On it Adam ﷺ was created, on it he was entered into paradise, on it he was expelled, and the Hour will not come except on a Friday.” (Muslim 854). And: “Whoever dies on Friday or the night of Friday is protected from the trials of the grave.” (Tirmidhi 1074). Friday has a special window of answered dua — the Prophet ﷺ described an hour on Friday in which any Muslim stands in prayer and asks Allah ﷻ for good and it is given to him. (Bukhari 935, Muslim 852).
The Sunnah of Friday
The Friday Sunnah: ghusl in the morning (strongly encouraged), wearing the best clothes, using perfume, going early to the mosque, reciting Surah Al-Kahf, sending abundant salawat on the Prophet ﷺ, making dua especially in the final hour of the afternoon, attending the khutbah and Jumu’ah prayer in congregation. The Prophet ﷺ warned that missing three consecutive Jumu’ahs without excuse results in Allah ﷻ placing a seal over the heart. (Abu Dawud 1052, Tirmidhi 500, authenticated).
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Jumu’ah obligatory in Islam?
Yes — the Quran directly commands hastening to the Friday prayer (62:9) and the Prophet ﷺ warned that missing three consecutive Jumu’ahs without excuse causes Allah ﷻ to seal the heart (Abu Dawud 1052). It is obligatory for every free adult Muslim male. Women, children, travellers, and the ill are excused though it is recommended for those able to attend.
What should you do on Fridays in Islam?
The complete Friday Sunnah: ghusl in the morning, wear best clothes, use fragrance, read Surah Al-Kahf, send abundant salawat on the Prophet ﷺ, go early to the mosque, attend khutbah and Jumu’ah prayer, make dua in the final hour of the afternoon (the window of answered dua — Bukhari 935). Friday is the best day of the week — use its specific practices deliberately.
The best day the sun rises on. Adam ﷺ created on it. An hour in it when dua is answered. Surah Al-Kahf. Salawat. The mosque early. Make Friday count — it is not just prayer day.
