Muhasabah

Surah Al-Ikhlas — سُورَةُ الْإِخْلَاص — is the 112th surah of the Quran, comprising four verses. The Prophet ﷺ said: “It is equal to a third of the Quran.” (Bukhari 5013, Muslim 811). It is the surah of pure monotheism — Al-Ikhlas means sincerity or purity — and its four verses contain the complete Islamic theology of God’s nature in the most concentrated form available.

The text and meaning

Qul huwAllahu ahad — Say: He is Allah ﷻ, the One. The command to declare — actively, publicly, sincerely — that He is One. Ahad means singularly, absolutely One — not merely one among others but uniquely, incomparably One. Allahus samad — Allah ﷻ is As-Samad: the Self-Sufficient, the One to Whom all creation turns in need, Who Himself is in need of nothing. Lam yalid wa lam yulad — He did not beget, nor was He begotten. This verse directly addresses the greatest theological error about God — that He has children or parents. Neither applies to Allah ﷻ. Wa lam yakul lahu kufuwan ahad — And there is none comparable to Him. No equivalent, no match, no likeness. These four verses are the complete theological summary of tawheed.

Why it equals a third of the Quran

Scholars explain: the Quran covers three main themes — stories of the prophets and nations, rulings and laws, and the names and attributes of Allah ﷻ. Surah Al-Ikhlas addresses the entire third theme — the nature and attributes of Allah ﷻ — in its four verses. Reciting it once carries the weight of reciting a third of the Quran. Reciting it three times carries the weight of the full Quran in terms of content — which is why the Prophet ﷺ incorporated it into the three Quls practice morning, evening, and before sleep.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Surah Al-Ikhlas worth a third of the Quran?

Because the Quran has three primary themes and Al-Ikhlas addresses one of them — the names and attributes of Allah ﷻ — entirely in its four verses. The Prophet ﷺ confirmed it equals a third (Bukhari 5013). A man who loved this surah and recited it repeatedly was told by the Prophet ﷺ that his love of it would admit him to paradise. (Bukhari 774).
