Tawheed — تَوْحِيد — is the Islamic doctrine of divine oneness: the affirmation that Allah ﷻ is One, unique, without partner, without equal, without anything comparable to Him. It is the single most important concept in Islam. The Prophet ﷺ spent the first thirteen years of his prophethood in Mecca teaching almost nothing else. It is the content of the Shahada, the opening of the Quran, the theme of Surah Al-Ikhlas (described as worth a third of the Quran), and the reason creation exists.

The three categories of tawheed

Scholars have categorised tawheed into three dimensions. Tawheed al-Rububiyyah — the oneness of Lordship: Allah ﷻ alone is the creator, sustainer, and controller of all that exists. No one shares in His creation or management of the universe. Tawheed al-Uluhiyyah — the oneness of worship: all worship must be directed to Allah ﷻ alone. Prayer, dua, sacrifice, tawaf, vowing — none of these may be directed to other than Allah ﷻ. This is the dimension that distinguishes a Muslim from a mushrik (one who associates others with Allah ﷻ). Tawheed al-Asma was-Sifat — the oneness of names and attributes: affirming the names and attributes Allah ﷻ has given Himself without distortion, negation, asking how, or likening to creation.

Why it is the foundation of everything

The Prophet ﷺ instructed Muadh ibn Jabal ؓ when sending him to Yemen: “The first thing you call them to is the testimony that there is no god but Allah ﷻ.” (Bukhari 1458). Tawheed comes before prayer, before fasting, before charity — because without correct tawheed, no act of worship has the correct foundation. A deed performed for other than Allah ﷻ, or mixed with devotion to other than Him, is void (Quran 39:65). Tawheed is not an advanced theological topic for scholars — it is the first obligation of every person who enters Islam and the continuous obligation of every Muslim thereafter.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is tawheed in Islam?

Tawheed is the Islamic doctrine of divine oneness — affirming that Allah ﷻ alone is the Creator and Sustainer (Rububiyyah), that worship belongs to Him alone (Uluhiyyah), and that His names and attributes are affirmed as He described them without distortion (Asma was-Sifat). It is the foundation of Islam and the content of the Shahada. The Prophet ﷺ spent the first thirteen years of prophethood establishing it before other obligations were revealed.

What is the difference between tawheed and shirk?

Tawheed is the affirmation of Allah’s ﷻ oneness in all its dimensions. Shirk is its opposite — associating partners with Allah ﷻ in any of the three categories. Major shirk (directing acts of worship to other than Allah ﷻ) is the only sin Allah ﷻ says He will not forgive if a person dies in it (Quran 4:48). Minor shirk — particularly riya (showing off in worship) — is less severe but still a major spiritual disease the Prophet ﷺ described as the thing he feared most for the ummah.

Thirteen years in Mecca teaching almost only this. Tawheed is not an advanced topic. It is the first obligation and the continuous one. Everything else is built on it.
